What even is morning?

First things: Morning is a concept.

Merriam-Webster defines morning as both “dawn,” “the time from sunrise to noon” AND “the time from midnight to noon.”

So, you know, whatever.

I know it when I see it

Morning, to me, feels like the period from sunrise to noon. Although I would also say “three o’clock in the morning” without hesitation.

Here’s also what I say:

Morning is a container for all the things I want to do before “the day” begins. To drink coffee alone in a quiet house, cozy up on the couch with a book, and write down any dreams I can remember. But most of all, to get outside and witness everything coming to life again.

Morning is the best time to go out and find birds and see what they’re up to. Before the sun rises too high, when the light is low and glowy. Bonus if it’s misty with morning fog.

Morning is “beginning.” I like this most of all. Morning is possibility and freshness and another chance to do some things right.
